OCTOBER 18

Shark What is a Mako?  It is the fastest breed of sharks capable of swimming up to 40 MPH.
What behavior does a Mako Shark exhibit?  Extremely active, Makos have been know to attack boats, and are dangerous to swimmers, they put up a ferocious fight when hooked leaping out of the water.

Gossip  NEWS FOR WEEK:  All of our practices will be held as scheduled this week.  We should have signed up for either the November open meet or the Swim and Rock meet in November.  Thursday and Friday this week will be "Tootsie Roll Pop"  day..  Saturday we will be having our overnight camping trip, (lets hope for dry weather).

How important is the start of a race?  This is the time where every swimmer has an equal chance in the race.  The shorter the race the more important the start becomes.  Not only is it the fastest part of your race, but it will set the tone for your race also.  In a 50 Free make a small mistake and your race is over.  In a 200 Free make a small mistake and you may be able to overcome it later in the race.  DO NOT FORGET HOWEVER EVERY SMALL MISTAKE ADDS UP TO ONE BIG ONE!  The three ingredients of a start are REACTION===POWER===ENTRY.  The reaction is how fast can you react to the beep without committing a false start.  Something you can do to practice this reaction is set your watch so it will beep every few seconds, close your eyes and clap every time you hear the beep.  The power starts with the arms, practice grabbing the edge of the block and use your arms to LAUNCH yourself.  As the arms move use your feet to push away from the blocks.  The entry is very important, as your hands enter the water they are creating a small hole and you want to get your whole body through that opening with out causing more resistance.  Don't forget hand on top of hand and keep the chin tucked (do not lift to soon it's like putting on the brakes).
What do you all think?  Let's focus on this stuff every time we work on starts.
