Topic of the Week:  "IT'S ALL IN THE FINISH" Checker
You know we have talked all year on how to attack our races, and how depending on the event you may have several races within a race.  Our goal on all of our starts is to be ahead of the competition or at least even with them, attack the turns and use the wall to OUR advantage.  The wall is a positive not a negative, and WE WILL gain an advantage here.  We have OUR breathing patterns, and our CUE WORDS to tell us when to go in our races, BUT WHAT ABOUT THE FINISH!

The first thing is that regardless of the stroke We should always finish the race with our head under water in a full stretch out position.  Yes, that includes backstrokers and breaststrokers!  Face should always stay in until you stop the touch pad.  The race goes to the one who STOPS THE CLOCK first, not who touches the wall first!  Some of us like to relax or just stay at the same pace as we near the wall.  Something I like to tell Kids in the Summer is that think of the finish wall as a Walking Into The Wall road block and to get through it we have to take OUR bodies to a different gear to get through it.  This shift in gears should take place 8-10 yards out, and if your competition is coached correctly as they will be, they will be shifting and you can fade in a hurry without the shift.  This must be done in practice repeat after repeat set after set.  Here is something to ponder:

"MY PERFECT RACE" Perfect

My perfect race
My perfect race
If only it had been,
I did everything right but one thing--
I admit it; I said I did.

I did my best dive Diving
I tried, oh,  I tried
My strokes were perfect, long and lean,  Swimming
My coach said I looked like a fighting machine.
On my turns, I bounced off the wall,
My mother said I looked very tall. Stilts

My perfect race
My perfect race
If only it had been,
But because of my haste
I finished second place
As I BREATHED into my finish!
