February 26 update

Sad As you know by now, there will be no practice for the rest of the week as George Mason just informed all the rental groups of that yesterday afternoon.  We will move on from here as I truly believe from what I  Bow Down Before You  saw yesterday that all of you are ready to do great things this weekend.  My suggestion for anyone swimming this weekend is to get in the water on Wed (Thursday if you have to and just loosen up).  Here are a couple of workouts that you could do.

WORKOUT #1
500 FEEL GOOD FREE (EVERY 4TH 25 YOUR STROKE DRILL)
8X50 KICK (STROKE KICK DOWN A3/  FREE KICK BACK A4)
2X250IM (25FLY/50BACK/75BREAST/100FREE
FLY A4 ALL THE REST BUILD FROM A3 TO A5 FOR TRANSITION)
                  GOOD TIGHT TURNS.
8X50 FREE  1-4 A5 DOWN A3 BACK  5-8 A3 DOWN A5 BACK (25 SECONDS REST)
8X25 4CHOICE LAST 4 FREE ALL A5  BREAKOUTS  (30 SECONDS REST)
50 A2 STRETCH OUT

That will put you at 2000 which is all you need now!

"SWIM TO WIN"

Winning isn't normal...however, those who do, typically get the results they want from their race.  All too often as a coach I observe this;
  • swimmer is driven to meet a goal time (best time, time standard, all star cut)
  • swimmer is focused on effort level during the swim, and not swimming to compete with the swimmer next door.
  • swimmer finishes between 4th and 8th in the heat, adds time and becomes very disappointed in the swim.
The swimmer's disappointment was in the result, not in the swim itself.  I would suggest to that swimmer, next time, not to look at the number to the right, but to the number on the left to see if you were the first one to the wall!  (place) SWIMMING TO WIN gets swimmers to do their best!  Most often swimmers who are ending up 1-2-3 in the heat are going best times.  Swimmers who are winning their heats are making it to the next level.  Do you HAVE to win to do all these things?  No, but it sure helps the odds.

"Wait a minute, are you telling us to BEAT THE SNOT OUT OF EVERYONE IN THE POOL?  That's unsportsmanlike!  What is sportsmanlike is putting your best effort into the competitive drive, anything less is unsportsman like?  "Beating " people isn't normal.  Racing people is!  When you are seeded in a meet, you are placed in a heat of people of similar speed.  It makes sense that if you were to make every effort to win that heat, you would be swimming faster than you ever have before.

Competition brings out the best in us.  Without those 7 other people in your heat it becomes more difficult to swim faster.  Those people are there to push you.  They are swimming...swimming with you...not AGAINST you.  They cannot hinder the speed at which you are traveling because they are all going in the same direction.

I mentioned that swimming isn't normal.  That's true, it's extraordinary.  You don't have to be extraordinary to win, but YOU MUST DO SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY TO WIN!  Be a Mako Shark age grouper who does what is not normal...but extraordinary.... THE ONE WHO DARES TO SWIM GREAT AND WINS!!!                                                                             MIKE
